If you’ve ever been stranded because your car won’t start, you left your car parked at a wrong spot and never found it after you came back, or even worse, your vehicle had to be towed away from the scene of an accident, then you already know what a tow truck driver does. Tow truck driver job description consists of using conventional, wheel-lift, full-float, and flatbed tow trucks to move vehicles that cannot run: they have been damaged, broken down, abandoned or impounded by the police, or need transportation for any other reason. The tow truck operator will be responsible for attaching the disabled vehicle to the tow truck, making sure the towed vehicle is lit by affixing lights onto it and transporting it to its destination, the service station or junkyard.

Q: How Much Do Tow Truck Drivers Make? A: The average salary for a tow truck driver in the United States is $64,649 per year, according to an estimate based on anonymous submissions. It’s important to point out that the base salary and benefits can vary depending on the state. With that being said, tow truck drivers make around $15/h on average.

Q: How to Become a Tow Truck Driver? A: You have to be at least 18 or older to operate a tow truck. However, many companies favor candidates who already have some experience. You will have to go through a physical exam, background checks, and most importantly – driver training. The vast majority of companies don’t put too much value into education, but many employees like to see at least a high school diploma.

Q: Can I Get Part-Time Truck Driver Jobs? A: Yes, you can! Part-time truck driver jobs are great for people who don’t want to max out their working hours but still have a flexible schedule. Most part-time truck driver jobs require you to drive solo, mostly because team drivers work on long distances whereas solo drivers haul shorter distances.

Q: What Does Reasonable Accommodation Mean? A: A reasonable accommodation refers to any change to the hiring process and work environment that allows a person with a disability to perform the essential functions of the job they were hired for. In simpler terms, companies that have more than 15 employees are required to provide reasonable accommodations, some of which may include a flexible work schedule, reserved parking, accessibility improvements in the work area, and more.

Q: Do You Need a CDL to Be a Tow Truck Driver? A: Not all tow truck companies require a CDL, but the US Department of Transportation does require a CDL for vehicles and cargos weighing above 26,000 lbs. Since a medium-sized tow truck weighs at least 26,000 lbs, it’s very helpful to have a CDL.
